Bikie Laws: Crimes Against Legality?

Mark Le Grande has written an important article that expresses deep concern about the bikie laws that have been recently passed in some Australian states.

He joins others like the Law Society of New South Wales and Professor Paul Wilson who believe that these laws are an overreaction.

Yet the NSW Attorney General describes the attempts by the Bikers Council to engage a QC to challenge the laws a “stunt”.

Le Grande reviews the laws passed almost 30 years ago that he describes as the “first breach in the dike of the common law privileges protecting citizens from the arbitrary exercise of state power.” He concludes that ever since there has been a steady widening of the gap.

I believe he is correct and we all need to be vigilant and active to redress these injustices. Today is a good day to think about these things. Every Anzac Day we hear so much about the freedom we enjoy and the sacrifices that were made to ensure it — yet we sit back and meekly allow our freedoms to go down the drain.
